Episode #4: Finding the language gaps we don’t see.

by | May 1, 2023 | blog

In episode #1 some weeks ago (Episode #1: Understanding Speech and Text For Better Grammar. – English with Tim), I showed how gaps in our understanding of input- speech we hear and text we read- can cause us to make mistakes in grammar when it’s time to speak or write. But how do we find the gaps? One way is with dictations, exercises where you try to reproduce in speech or writing the exact words a teacher says to you.

Do you use dictogloss in your lessons? Great activity for groups.

    Hi Elizaveta!
Sorry for the late reply, again it has been a hectic week. I am very grateful for your listening and asking questions each week!
For those of you who don’t know, a dictogloss exercise looks like this:

To answer your question, I do not use dictogloss. I think it’s a great exercise, but there are some things that stop me from using it. The biggest one is that all my language lessons at this point are online and with one student. Another is that my students usually have specific goals and not much time to reach them- we have just one or two classes per week and that time is spent mainly on vocabulary learning.
I do think dictogloss is fantastic, though, and if I get back in a traditional classroom, then I will surely use dictogloss!
